Your car's data stays yours.
Caliper is built so your vehicle data stays yours. Here's exactly what that means, including the two Pro features that send data off your phone and what they send.
The short version
Caliper has no account, no analytics and no advertising. Everything you log is stored on your iPhone and, if you turn it on, in your own iCloud. The developer never sees it.
Two optional Pro features are the exception: smart document scanning and the AI answers in Ask about your car and the Deal evaluator. To do their job they send a specific, limited piece of data to a server the developer runs, which passes it to Anthropic's Claude AI model for reading and returns the result. Nothing is stored along the way. The details are in the section below.
What Caliper collects
Nothing on the developer's behalf. Caliper does not collect, transmit, or share any personal data with the developer or any third party, apart from the Pro features described under "Features that use AI".
Where your data lives
All vehicle data, including service logs, fuel records, trips, mileage, photos and receipts, is stored on your iPhone. If you turn on iCloud sync, the data is copied to your own private CloudKit container. Apple manages that container; the developer cannot read, query, or access it.
iCloud sync
iCloud sync is optional and off until you enable it. When enabled, sync runs between your devices using your Apple ID. The developer receives no copy of any synced data and has no key to decrypt it.
Features that use AI
These features are part of Caliper Pro and only run when you use them. They are the only parts of Caliper that send anything to a server.
Smart document scanning
When you scan a service receipt, fuel receipt, vehicle registration or roadworthiness certificate with Pro, Caliper sends the scanned page images to a server operated by the developer, which forwards them to Anthropic's Claude API. Claude reads the document and returns structured fields such as the shop name, date, odometer reading, line items and total. Caliper then shows you those fields to check before anything is saved.
Before a page leaves your phone it is reduced in size and stripped of metadata, including any location data the camera attached. The developer's server keeps no copy of the images or the extracted fields. It records only that a request happened, the document type, the response status and how long it took.
Anthropic processes the images under its commercial terms, which do not permit it to train models on that data. Anthropic's handling and retention of API data is described in Anthropic's privacy policy.
Receipts and registration documents can carry your name, address, licence plate or VIN. If you would rather those never leave your phone, don't use cloud scanning: the free on-device scan reads the document with Apple's text recognition and sends nothing. Lease contracts and finance agreements are always read on-device and are never sent to the server.
Ask about your car
When you ask one of the built-in questions about a car's service history, Caliper sends that car's service records, meaning the dates, work carried out, shop names, costs and odometer readings, to the developer's server, which passes them to Claude to write the answer. It does not send your name, your other cars, your trips, or anything outside that car's service history. Nothing is stored on the server.
Deal evaluator coaching
When you ask for an explanation of a lease deal comparison, Caliper sends only the figures from that comparison, such as the monthly payment, term, fees and the calculated difference. It does not send the car, the dealer, the lease document, or anything about you. Nothing is stored on the server.
Usage limits
Each AI feature has a daily limit. To enforce it, Caliper sends a random identifier that was generated when the app was installed. It is not tied to you, your Apple ID or your device hardware, and it is deleted along with the app. The server keeps a count against that identifier that expires after a day. Like any web server, the developer's server also sees your IP address while handling a request and may use it briefly to limit repeated requests; it is not stored.
Where the server runs
The developer's server is a small stateless function hosted on Vercel. It has no database and stores no user content. Vercel and Anthropic act as processors on the developer's behalf and do not receive your data for any purpose other than handling the request.
Purchases and subscriptions
Subscriptions, lifetime upgrades, and any other in-app purchases are processed by Apple. The developer receives only the standard transaction confirmations Apple provides: anonymous identifiers used to verify your purchase. No payment details, name, or email is shared with the developer.
No analytics, no advertising
Caliper contains no third-party analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, no crash reporter that sends data to the developer, and no tracking of any kind. Outside the AI features described above, the app does not phone home.
What Apple sees
Apple may collect standard App Store Connect analytics, such as download counts, anonymised usage figures and crash reports, under Apple's privacy policy. The developer sees these in aggregate, never tied to an individual user.
Children
Caliper is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
If this policy ever changes in a material way, the new version will be posted here with an updated effective date below. Continued use of Caliper after changes constitutes acceptance of the new policy.
